Pokemon Go Alolan Pokemon: how to get Alolan Raichu and every other Alola form Pokemon

While Pokemon Go is currently limited to the first few generations of Pokemon, some of the Pokemon from the most recent full-blown release in the main series are available out in the world – Alolan Pokemon. Here’s how to catch some of Pokemon Go’s Alolan Pokemon forms.

Despite the fact that Pokemon Go is currently angling towards getting up to gen 4 of Pokemon, there are a few gen 7 Pokemon available in Pokemon Go – Alolan Pokemon. These unique Pokemon are different forms of breeds that you’ll already be familiar with, first discovered in Alola, the setting of Pokemon Sun and Moon. On this page, we’re going to explain how to get your hands on all of the Pokemon Go Alolan Pokemon Forms in the game – plus explain how these new Pokemon types differ.

Keep in mind that Alola Pokemon are new versions of existing creatures. As such they’ll show up in your Pokedex as different forms of Pokemon you will have already seen. They don’t have a different Pokedex entry, but rather are treated as an offshoot of the existing entry for the Pokemon they’re related to. In a sense, this works similar to how the Pokedex handles Shiny Pokemon and the different forms of multi-form Pokemon like Castform.

Given that they’re treated as just a form of the same creature, the Pokemon Go Alolan Pokemon are treated as the same beast at a higher level – meaning they share candy for evolution. They do have differing types, however, so their potential move sets and type strengths and weaknesses in battle. They’ll also rank slightly differently (though not hugely) on our list of Pokemon Go’s Best Pokemon.

With that noted, let’s get into listing which Pokemon have Alolan forms…

How to get every Alolan Form Pokemon in Pokemon Go

We do actually list a method of getting every single Pokemon Go Alolan Pokemon in the handy table above alongside their stats and pictures, but just for the avoidance of any confusion at all we also wanted to plainly list the methods you can use to catch Alolan Pokemon in text form – nothing beats a nice bullet point list, after all.

Ultimately, a lot of catching the Alola form Pokemon is going to be down to sheer luck – many of them are encountered in the wild or hatched from 7km Pokemon eggs, and unlike with, say, Eevee Evolution, there’s no way to manipulate this to get the result you want – you just have to keep trying. Some are more guaranteed, however – but they’ll also require you party up with some other players and tackle a difficult raid battle. Here’s how to get them all:

  • Alolan Rattata & Alolan Raticate: these pair both appear in the wild. Alolan Rattata can also hatch from 7km eggs. Alolan Raticate can of course be evolved from the Alolan Rattata, too.
  • Alolan Diglett & Alolan Geodude: hatched from 7km eggs but also rarely found in the wild.
  • Alolan Sandshrew, Vulpix, Meowth & Grimer: all six of these ‘basic’ non-evovled forms can be hatched from 7km eggs. That leads right into…
  • Alolan Sandslash, Ninetales, Persian, Dugtrio, Graveler, Golem & Muk: these evolved forms of the previous Pokemon are all obtained through evolution – just evolve the earlier Alola form and it’ll naturally be an Alolan form after evolution, too.
  • Alolan Exeggutor: available as a raid battle at gyms but also occasionally found in the wild
  • Alolan Raichu, Exeggutor & Marowak: available as Tier 2, 3 and 4 raid battles at gyms from 19th July 2018 onwards.
