The 32-core AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX is now available for pre-order
The first batch of AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2 CPUs have been listed for pre-order. If you want AMD's second-generation 32-core / 64-thread behemoth, the Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX, now’s your chance to nab yourself one as soon as it launches on August 13, 2018.
The top Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX will launch proper on August 13, 2018 - exactly one week from now. The Ryzen Threadripper 2950X will launch shortly after, on August 31, while the two remaining Threadripper 2 models, the Ryzen Threadripper 2970X and Ryzen Threadripper 2920X, won’t be on the shelves until an unspecified date in October.
Looking for a cheaper chip? Here are the best CPUs for gaming - they’re not too shabby at non-gamer stuff, too.
The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX will lead the charge with its ludicrous 32-cores of simultaneously multithreaded compute power. It will feature a base clock of 3GHz and boost up to an impressive 4.2GHz. It also comes with 64MB of super speedy L3 cache, and comes in with a 250W TDP. For the privilege, you’ll be asked to cough up a cool $1,799.
The second chip arriving August, although not until the 31st, is the Ryzen Threadripper 2950X. This is a 16-core / 32-thread chip that boosts a little higher than the preeminent chip, at 3.5GHz base and 4.4GHz boost. It also comes with half the L3 cache, fitting for half the cores, and just a 180W TDP. With this CPU priced at $899, you’ll have to part with half the cash, too.
