The Fallout 76 beta will be the full game, and your progress will carry over

Update, August 6: Fallout 76 beta access will let you play the full game and carry progress to the final release.

The Fallout 76 beta - or B.E.T.A., if you’re into unnecessary acronyms - is set for release in October. Bethesda has provided a handful of details on the upcoming “Break it Early Test Application,” with a new bit of info confirming that you can expect the beta to feature the full experience, and you won’t be missing a beat when the final game goes live.

“Our current plan for the B.E.T.A.,” Bethesda says, “is it will be the full game and all your progress is saved for launch. We hope you join us!” Beta access will go out to a group of eligable participants starting in October - you'll need to pre-order to get in.

More info is available on the official FAQ, with some earlier info getting confirmed via a community post. If you pre-order Fallout 76 from a selection of participating retailers, you’ll get access to the beta when it launches this fall. The beta will begin first on Xbox One before hitting other platforms - including, of course, PC.

Notably, among the participating retailers listed on the official pre-order page, there’s no Steam option, and Valve’s marketplace still doesn’t have a store page for Fallout 76. It looks increasingly likely that the game will be exclusive to Bethesda’s own launcher, at least at first.

Your beta access will be automatic if you’ve purchased the game digitally, but you’ll receive a code from your chosen retailer if you spring for a physical release.
