Two new Overwatch League franchises in the US and China set to be announced soon

Overwatch League is reportedly set to confirm two new teams today, with franchises in Atlanta and Guangzhou. Both cities have been the subject of substantial recent reports in Overwatch League franchising over the past week, though they haven’t been the only ones. We expect six teams to join the League in time for season two.

An official announcement about the new teams is expected later today, according to esports consultant Rod Breslau. Neither team announcement would come as a surprise. An ESPN report last week suggested Guangzhou, China would get a franchise courtesy of the Nenking Group, owners of the Guangzhou Long-Lions basketball team.

A follow-up report from ESPN says that Cox Enterprises will be backing the Atlanta, GA team in the US. This same report suggests that the League’s new team cost might reach as high as $60 million for the six teams coming in season two.

Notably missing from the proposed announcement is a Paris team, which was reportedly finalizing negotiations for a final spot in the League last week along with Guangzhou. The Paris team would be backed by McCourt Global, a holding company ironically based in Los Angeles.

The end of the day is closing in quickly, though League announcements tend to come rather late. Either way, we can likely expect to know who’s joining OWL for season two sooner rather than later.
