Minecraft still has more monthly players than Fortnite
August was Fortnite’s biggest month to date with Epic stating the battle royale’s player count hit 78.3 million. It’s an astonishing number, however, it barely touches the player count of Minecraft which, according to Microsoft, currently has 91 million monthly active players. That’s just shy of a 13 million player difference. Fortnite’s monthly player numbers aren’t the only statistic to hit the millions. Total downloads of the game are reaching the 125 million mark but, again, Minecraft has managed to maintain its intense popularity with over 150 million copies sold. With Fortnite releasing in 2017 and Minecraft in 2009, the sandbox title has an almost ten year head start, but there’s not hint that those numbers are falling despite the years. With Minecraft’s success and strong playerbase there’s not been much discussion of Microsoft creating Minecraft 2. Helen Chiang, head of Minecraft at Microsoft, recently said in interview with Business Insider Australia that a sequel could fracture the community and its playerbase. “We’re trying to keep our community together,” Chiang says. “That’s why our updates are free. We don’t want to ask [players] to move from ‘Minecraft 1’ to ‘Minecraft 2’. We want them to just enjoy ‘Minecraft;.
