Red Dead Redemption 2 sold more in 8 days than the original did in 8 years

November 7, 2018 Red Dead Redemption 2's sales numbers have topped 17 million.

Red Dead Redemption 2 had incredible first week sales, and the latest release from Rockstar parent Take-Two shows exactly how big that launch has been. The cowboy epic has sold over 17 million units since launch. In its first eight days, it sold-in more than the original Red Dead Redemption did in eight years. Getting that number puts to rest any doubt over the game's fortunes. Rockstar noted last week that with over $725 million in global retail sell-through over the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of its release, Red Dead Redemption 2 was "the single-biggest opening weekend in the history of entertainment." Rockstar's last major release, Grand Theft Auto V, actually managed to bank $1 billion in its first three days of sale, but because it launched on a Tuesday those three days did not fall on a weekend. Thus, Red Dead 2 had the second-biggest launch in all of entertainment, but the biggest opening weekend. Regardless of any calendar shenanigans, that's still an incredible set of numbers - especially because it didn't even launch on one of the three major platforms (ours). It's only boosted by details revealed in today's Take-Two financial report.
