AMD Navi release date, GPU specs, rumours, and performance

AMD's Navi graphics card launch is just a few months away, with a Navi release date before the end of September now officially confirmed by AMD's CEO, Dr. Lisa Su. These GPUs will be the first genuinely new Radeon chip design since Vega limped onto our desktops a year and a half ago. Though that architecture has at least been given a fresh lick of 7nm paint with the AMD Radeon VII gaming GPU.

Some recent rumours, admittedly from a 4chan user claiming to be an AMD employee, promise the flagship Navi graphics card will deliver sometimes GTX 1080-beating performance for just $259. Not only that but it will offer real-time ray tracing too, shine your shoes, and provide breakfast in bed every morning. Given that Sony has effectively announced ray tracing support for Navi with its latest PS5 reveal, that lends a little credence to these salty rumours. Though honestly, everything it says could have been extrapolated from months of previous speculation.

Despite claims of GTX 1080 performance, the next-gen 7nm Navi GPUs will be specced to dominate the mid-range market, taking on the GTX 1660 Ti et al, rather than trying to outpace the old Vega cards or go toe-to-toe with Nvidia's top Turing GPUs at the high end. AMD has confirmed as much with the Navi graphics card stack positioned below the Radeon VII.
